![]() Strip off infested lawns and dig out any remaining couch grass roots before re-turfing. This is best done in early spring when the plants will soon re-establish and around bulbs as the bulb foliage is dying, but is not practical around trees, shrubs and roses where roots may be considerably damaged. ![]() In cultivated areas, hand weeding can be done where there are small isolated infestations among herbaceous perennials. These quickly regrow and need to be removed before they form a new network of rhizomes. In uncultivated areas, forking out is possible in lighter soils, as much of the underground stem system is fairly shallow, but it is easy to leave behind small sections of rhizome in the ground. Cultural controlįirst consider non-chemical control options If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. Where these methods are not feasible, chemical controls may need to be used.
